Why didn’t you tell me?

This story is fictional, but all too true.   And repeated all too often.   And one that we may not think about until it’s too late – if ever.  If it hasn’t happened to you, it probably has to your friends and family. The names and the situations change – but the story doesn’t.   Abbie and Ben both grew up in houses where God was never mentioned.  They met in college.  By that time, Abbie had gone to church off and on.  Ben was too busy with sports on Sundays, so he never had the time or the interest for church.  When they got married Abbie gave up going to church to make things easier at home. Later, they had two kids – Chloe and Derek.  Like their parents, both kids received no exposure to God at home.  But Chloe heard about God from some of her friends.  After a series of arguments between Abbie and Ben, it was finally decided that Chloe could waste her Sunday mornings in church if that would keep the peace at home.  Derek didn’t want to have anything to do with either church or the fight.  He had plenty of friends […]

Is there popcorn on the floor in Heaven?

Is there popcorn on the floor in Heaven?  Or peanut shells?  There’s no killing people there.  But what about the “little” things?   Like popcorn at the movies?   Or peanut shells at a hockey game?   If you look up popcorn and peanuts to see if they’re even in the Bible – they aren’t.  For that matter, neither are movies or hockey.  And how many of the movies that are made would even be shown in Heaven?  Or – sadly – how many hockey games will there be?  Certainly, fighting won’t be there – but that’s OK – because enforcers won’t be needed since the “dirty” plays that keep fighting part of the game wouldn’t be there either. But still – there’s the question of popcorn, peanut shells, and other assorted stuff that we just leave on the ground.  Popcorn – probably a mistake – either spilled or dropped – but we figure someone else will clean it up and we move on.  Peanut shells – intentionally thrown on the floor because we can’t take our eyes off whatever sporting event we’re at – and besides someone’s paid to clean up our mess – so why even bother […]

Over the top claims about World War III?

“Over The Top Claims That This Is World War III” Just Plays Into Hands of ISIS according to President Obama. First of all, is it true that ISIS even wants to have World War III? Strictly speaking – No – it’s not true. What they actually want is Armageddon.  World War III isn’t their end game. Neither of the first two World Wars produced Armageddon, so another world war actually falls short of what they want. Here’s part of what the Qur’an has to say about “The End” – 96. Until, when Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj (Gog and Magog) are let loose (from their barrier), and they swiftly swarm from every mound. 97. And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (of fulfillment). Then (when mankind is resurrected from their graves), you shall see the eyes of the disbelievers fixedly stare in horror. (They will say): “Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this; nay, but we were Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).” 98. Certainly! You (disbelievers) and that which you are worshipping now besides Allaah, are (but) fuel for Hell! (Surely), you will enter it. 99. Had these (idols, etc.) been aaliha (gods), they would not have […]

The Next Life: better, worse, the same, or non-existent?

What’s your hope for the next life?  Better?   Worse?   The same?   Or that there won’t be a next life?   There’s really no other choices .  Logically, it must be one of these.  So pick one! Hoping there won’t be a next life Strictly speaking, not having a next life may be redundant – at least for some people.  Those that have thought of nothing after this life may have already decided whether that’s better, worse, or no different than the life they now have. So let’s start with that one. It’s kind of depressing.  No – it’s just plain depressing.  The thought of this being “it” – with nothing to follow – makes life seem pointless.  Suggestion: having been there myself, thinking this life is pointless – either try to find a way to make this life meaningful – or try to find a way to make the next one better.  (More on that thought later.) At the risk of sounding too “Pollyanna” – even doing something to try to make the next life be better will make this one seem better.  And even if there’s no life after this, at least this one will […]

Self-folding material?

Did the paper plane on the left really fold itself into that shape?   Does that make the paper – or whatever material it is – “intelligent?   Is this the first inanimate object that can manipulate itself?   Or, for those old enough to remember them, is this like the SASE? Remember the SASE?  In case you don’t – it was a “Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope”. I never did get them to work properly.  The darned things never did address or stamp themselves.   They failed to function – at all. Every single time I always ended up addressing them and putting on the stamp myself! So has the problem finally been solved? There’s a clue in the sentence below – along with more propaganda. Call it one small step for material science, one giant leap for origami. Researchers have created the first heat-reactive polymer material that can not only remember its current shape but also memorize new ones. The clue – it’s heat reactive. The propaganda – that it “memorizes” new shapes. PLEASE!!! What is the need by some people to give “intelligence” to objects that don’t have any? What is the need to make inanimate objects somehow seem to […]

Praising God in The Bible and Qur’an

Praise God!  This is something that Christians and Muslims both agree on.   Yes, some question whether we believe in the same “God”.  That’s the whole point of this series – to examine that most important question. More on that later.     For this one, let’s look at the next Sura, #1 – which would be the 5th by order of Revelation.  The translation is by Rashad Khalifa. It’s quite short.  Very much to the point. [1:1] In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. [1:2] Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe. [1:3] Most Gracious, Most Merciful. [1:4] Master of the Day of Judgment. [1:5] You alone we worship; You alone we ask for help. [1:6] Guide us in the right path; [1:7] the path of those whom You blessed; not of those who have deserved wrath, nor of the strayers. The truth is, except for maybe verse 7, I dare say most Christians would think it was said by a Christian – and – most Muslims would think it was said by a Muslim. God as gracious and merciful – something we both believe. God as Lord of the universe – of everything – […]
