A look at ourselves

A look at ourselves. We love to look at ourselves, right? Honestly, I don’t. And while I suspect others are like me, I know there’s a whole bunch of people who love to look at themselves in the mirror.

A look at ourselves

Unfortunately – or fortunately – depending, that’s not what we’re going to look at here.

Truth be told, I’m not real fond of looking at myself this way either. But it’s necessary. And so I do it.

This section is about us – as individuals.  The ways we act.  Maybe looking in the mirror.  Maybe looking at the way we view other people’s actions.

If you’re interested in a view of what happens with people when the government get’s involved in religion and God, then please check out government, religion and God.

This category could, in many ways, include literally everything I write.  But that would be pointless.  Some others that you might be looking for include:

How we (Americans, but it’s also applicable in other countries) view the Bible.  That’s in American theology is messed up.

Religious regulations in China.  Although it’s specifically about China, the kinds of things going on there are happening in other countries, although in a more subtle way.  It can be eye opening to look at our own countries in light of China.  That’s in Religious regulations in China.

A real look at ourselves

What am I talking about? I’m talking about looking at ourselves in relation to each other. And in relation to God.

Things like:  Do you know that you, like every one of us, is one of the other two men on the cross with Jesus?  Have you ever wondered, what’s missing from my life?  What about – Is God loving or angry?

If we don’t look, we might think we’re doing just fine. For those who remember Wile E. Coyote, of Road Runner fame, we’ll be off the edge of the cliff before we ever know what happened. BTW – if you don’t know about the Road Runner – Google Wile E. Coyote and check it out.

Things like The story of you – and Mr. J, are designed to make you think.  While everything on this site is really designed to make you think, it’s probably even more so in this category.  There are all sorts of life situations included here.  From why rich people give their money away – to – whether or not we have a right to die.

All of it should make every one of think about ourselves.  But it’s ourselves, in light of other people.  And in light of God.  And truthfully, if we look at ourselves in light of God, then we have no choice but to include our relationships with other people at the same time.

The Rich Young Man

Mt 19:16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life ?”

Mt 19:17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”

Mt 19:18 “Which ones?” the man inquired.
Jesus replied, ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’’”

Now, normally this passage is used to talk about giving up things that get in the way of us following Jesus.  But I left that part out intentionally.  I want to focus on love your neighbor as yourself.

When this person asks Jesus about how to gain eternal life – his relationship with God, Jesus brings in two other relationships as well.

First – with ourselves.  We are to love ourselves.  That’s hard sometimes.  For some of us, it’s hard most of the time – if not all the time.  But that’s not what God wants.

Secondly though, after telling us that we should love ourselves, Jesus says we should love others in the same way.  Now – that doesn’t mean be narcissistic or anything like that.  It’s about loving both ourselves and others in the same way that God loves us.

So we’re back to this thought – that there’s really no way to separate the three relationships when we bring God into the picture.
