Christmas

Why is Christmas so scary? What it’s really about. 2   Recently updated !

Why is Christmas so scary? Christmas.  It’s the time when we hear so much about how it brings out the best in people.  It’s time to give gifts.  It’s time to be nice to other people.  All those things. Scary stuff – isn’t it? And then there’s the baby – Jesus – the true “reason for the season”. A little baby. Very scary. Don’t laugh. It’s true. Updates This has been updated a couple times, including the new title – Why is Christmas so scary? And, what it’s really about. This one’s originally from 2011.  So – since we’re rapidly approaching one of the scariest times of the year for some people, it seems like a good time to update it again. Unlike most other updates, this is almost a rewrite, so I haven’t marked the latest ones. A very scary Christmas Christmas.  It’s the time when we hear so much about how it brings out the best in people.  It’s time to give gifts.  It’s time to be nice to other people.  All those things. What do we expect?

“It felt a little weird coming to a church. He and his dad had only attended church twice since his mom left them six months ago—once for Easter and then the week after, as if they were about to start a new habit but never quite got enough momentum to carry things through.” from Blur, by Steven James Post Views: 58

Why do rich people give their money away?

If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor … Yes – Jesus did say that.   And that’s what the Giving Pledge folks joining Bill & Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet are doing. But isn’t there more to being perfect that just giving lots of money to the poor? In case you haven’t heard of the Giving Pledge – here’s the info from their web site Home Page –   I think this home page tells a lot. It starts with the simple statement at the top of the page – The Giving Pledge is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Well – it still starts with the statement below, but the chart is gone.  I was going to update it with a larger image – but I can’t.  The home page is now filled with pictures of the givers.  They can even be sorted by giving year – enabling us to see who gave first and who are the late comers to the party.  You’ll understand more about that comment below. Philanthropy could include what we would generally call […]

What have I done? 2

Do you think Jesus ever said “Oh No!  What have I done?”   We were at the Christmas eve service at our church – the music was really nice – violin and piano as the main instruments – so I thought I’d just sit and quietly pray instead of singing. And that question came to me.   So I’m asking Jesus – did you ever say “Oh No!! What have I done!!??  These people – they’re aren’t worth this!” “Maybe it was when you were first born?  Laying there in that manger.  Not a five star establishment – although there was that one star up in the sky.  Were you already thinking it was a mistake.  Maybe you shouldn’t have agreed to it? “Maybe when you were twelve – and you’re in the temple.  You were there to learn – but the people were amazed at Your answers, instead of the other way around.  Certainly, by then, you must have realized something was wrong. “Maybe after that – as you were growing up – and got exposed to more of us.  I mean – watching us from Heaven is one thing – but actually being here – being one of […]
