The Screwtape Letters Study Guide

Introduction to The Screwtape Letters Study Guide

The Screwtape Letters Study Guide is intended to help you get the most from C.S. Lewis’ amazing book. It was written in 1941. Written in English. Not “American” English, but “English” English. That makes it harder for us across the pond to understand, as well as anyone else who uses American English. Plus, times have changed. The world is different now, a bit over eighty years later.

Forgiving the 50 and the 500 - A Parable from Jesus

The parable of Forgiving the 50 and the 500

Forgiving the 50 and the 500.  A very short parable.  About forgiveness and love. Two verses.  But it’s embedded in an actual event.  It must be very important.  This parable ended with a question from Jesus to a Pharisee named Simon.  (Not Simon Peter, the disciple.)  Jesus told Simon, “You have judged correctly”.  Jesus told the woman who was the “target” in the event, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”  Yes, it seems we can learn much from the parable of Forgiving the 50 and the 500.

What's important to you?

What’s important to you?

What’s important to you?  Do we even take time to think about that question?  Or are we just so focused on “now” that we don’t even know what’s important?

Maybe I should say, what’s important in your future?  You know, beyond the next few minutes?  Even better, your distant future?  Where do you hope to be at the end of your life?

In other words, what’s your life goal?  What’s important for you to be able to achieve your life goal?  Do I dare even ask if you’ve thought about the next life?  What happens after this one?

The problem of being selfish

The Problem of Being Selfish

The Problem of Being Selfish.  Yes, most of us know being selfish isn’t good.  And we’re really good at recognizing when other people are selfish.  But do we know when we are being selfish?  Furthermore, for Christians, do we even realize the full extent of our selfishness?  Not to mention, how we should react when other Christians are selfish?  It may not be what you think.

Is the Holy Spirit the Spirit of the Father or the Spirit of the Son

Is the Holy Spirit the Spirit of the Father or the Spirit of the Son

Who is the Holy Spirit? Is He the Spirit of the Father? Or maybe the Spirit of the Son? Does it matter? And is it “who” or “what”? So many questions! And it’s tempting to just ignore them. Or assume they don’t really matter. Just call it/him the Spirit of God and be done with it. And yet, the Holy Spirit is one of the three “persons” of God. And so, it is important to know what we can about Him.

Why do you stand here looking into the sky? Do something!

Why do you stand here looking into the sky? Do something!

Why do you stand here looking into the sky?  If you’re a wolf in the snow, you’re looking for clear sky.  Or maybe just like to howl at the moon. If you’re a Christian, then this question is for you. Actually, this question was for you.  It was asked a couple thousand years ago.  And it’s still as valid now as it was then. And the point was/is – do something!
