Hopefully, you’ve been through the first two segments of this Screwtape Letters Study Guide. It will really help you with using it. I’ve used a combination of color coding and different fonts to aid in identifying what’s going on. There’s also some help with getting started, either in a group or by yourself.

The Screwtape Letters Study Guide is intended to help you get the most from C.S. Lewis’ amazing book. It was written in 1941. Written in English. Not “American” English, but “English” English. That makes it harder for us across the pond to understand, as well as anyone else who uses American English. Plus, times have changed. The world is different now, a bit over eighty years later.

Forgiving the 50 and the 500. A very short parable. About forgiveness and love. Two verses. But it’s embedded in an actual event. It must be very important. This parable ended with a question from Jesus to a Pharisee named Simon. (Not Simon Peter, the disciple.) Jesus told Simon, “You have judged correctly”. Jesus told the woman who was the “target” in the event, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Yes, it seems we can learn much from the parable of Forgiving the 50 and the 500.

Evil Exists: “Only minutes ago I doubted anything that might be called supernatural; now I knew that I had been naive. I knew neither the extent of it nor the means by which to deal with it, but I was certain that evil existed. I had come face-to-face with it and survived long enough to know at least that much.” from “Immanuel’s Veins” by Ted Dekker

What if we’re on the way to Heaven – and we have to take a detour? A trip to Hell. Some think the Bible says Jesus went to Hell during the time between His death on the cross and His resurrection on the third day – what we now know as Easter. So why not us?

We talk about something being Hell on earth. But is this really it? But before we got there, let’s see what Hell means. Of course, it’s about the devil, Satan, being in charge. And everything happens his way. That’s what being in charge is about, right? And one other thing. For those of you that believe in God, He’s not there.

Open your eyes. Take the plank out of your own eye. Really see with them. The way Jesus said we need to see. Then ask, where is my treasure? Is it in Heaven or on earth? ‘Cause if it’s on earth, you’re on the path to Hell. You know – the path of the blind?
Please, don’t be so devote to someone – anyone – who’d so devoted to things not from God that you lose sight of when you also become so devoted to the dark that you end up on the wrong path.

Are there gun people in Heaven? You know – people who are really, really into guns? A while back, I asked a similar question – Are the guns in Heaven? And then there’s, Are there assault weapons in Heaven? Asking if there are gun people in Heaven seems like a logical next question.
First off, by “gun people” I mean people who are really, really in favor of people having guns. Someone like Meghan McCain, who recently said, “I’m not living without guns. It’s just that simple.”

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman. It’s part of John’s gospel that is often talked about. However, here’s a different view of it. Sure, it’s important to show that the “living water” that Jesus offered was for everyone. What if we look at it from the point of view of the Great Commission? Not just as we’re to spread the word to all nations. But as an example or template of how to go about spreading the gospel?
Notice the word on the chalkboard. “Feedback”. It seems like when we spread the gospel, we tend to want to talk. Just keep saying the nice “churchy” words, and people will get the message. They’ll say the so-called sinners prayer – which doesn’t exist – and be saved. Not.
