Is the gay marriage decision a wake-up call?

Is the gay marriage decision a wake-up call? You better believe it. The proponents are awake and know full well what they accomplished. If you’re a devout true believer of any of the religions of Abraham – Judaism, Christianity or Islam (in order of  historical appearance) – then this question is for you.   Do you realize what was accomplished?  And how will you respond? Yes – I am asking this question of believers of all three religions.   And yes – I mean true believers. Not those who have compromised their beliefs and think that God approves.  Because the Holy Books of all three religions are very clear about this –  He does not approve.  He’s also very clear about how we should respond.  Unfortunately, too many who claim to be true believers listen to that first statement on whether He approves – but not the second statement on how we should respond. What is the real issue? Early on, we read in Genesis 2:24 – a book read by all three Abrahamic religions – Ge 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become […]

Who would you not vote for?

People used to talk about who they would vote for. More and more, we seem to hear about who they would not vote for. But I have to ask, what exactly is accomplished by not voting for someone?   Let’s say we have two candidates – A and Z. Candidate A is from the party you would normally vote for.  However, Candidate A has a stance on one issue that you refuse to support. Candidate Z is from the party you would not normally vote for.  Not surprisingly, Candidate Z takes a position on many issues that are in opposition to your views. That one issue – let’s call it Issue #7 – with Candidate A caused you to not vote for that person. Therefore – you choose not to vote at all. Some people think this is the only option.  They can’t support someone in favor of Issue #7 – so they won’t vote at all. But – what have you accomplished by choosing not to vote at all? What about the very real possibility that Candidate Z wins? This happens because you are not alone in your opposition to Issue #7. You’ve told others not to vote for that person either. […]

The last place you look

You know the saying – you always find things in the last place you look. Kind of an odd saying, isn’t it?  After all – if you’ve found “it” – whatever “it” is – why would you keep looking? And then there’s the song – Looking for love in all the wrong places“. And the words that got this train of thought going – All of my rescuers are gone, long gone. What does it all mean?   Glad you asked.  Keep reading to find out. I was listening to my iPod (I know – it’s old technology.  But it’s in my car – always plugged into the power outlet so the dead battery doesn’t matter – and it works!  So I have no reason to look for something else to replace it.  Anyway – All of my rescuers are gone, long gone.  It’s from a song called Hazard, by Richard Marx. The first verse goes like this – My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes That boy’s not right Three years ago when I came to know Mary First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies And […]

The problem of sadness

Spoiler alert here – if you haven’t seen the Pixar movie Inside Out, and don’t want to know anything about what happens in it – stop reading here!!  Go see the movie, then come back. Sadness – that’s a bad thing right? Joy – that’s the way to go, right? Joy all the time! Sadness never! In the Bible, we read the words of Paul – Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. OK – joy is there.  Right after love.  Surely – there’s no sadness in love, right?  Why would love have anything to do with sadness?  And there’s nothing in the rest of those verses to indicate sadness has anything to add to our lives. That’s the way I always felt too.  So much sadness in my life had to mean something was wrong […]
