It's week three of radiation treatment - time to be thankful

It’s week three of radiation treatment – time to be thankful – Psalm 23

Yesterday, I began the third week of my radiation treatment for prostate cancer. As I was laying in the tomography machine, the 23rd Psalm began to go through my mind. It was very comforting. Peaceful. Reassuring. And yes, that is the Psalm with the valley of the shadow of death. The Psalm that reminds us of what we have to be thankful for.

Does Jesus want to carry us when times are tough?

Does Jesus want to carry us when times are tough? This question is like those tests where we’re supposed to pick the “best” answer.  And “yes” is not the best answer!  I used to think it was, but I learned that it really isn’t.  There is one answer that’s better – although there are several answers that could start with “no, He wants …”

Curious?  Confused?

Let me try to help straighten out this question.

If God is for us, who can be against us?

If God is for us, who can be against us?

If God is for us, who can be against us? It’s a question that sounds like the answer is “No one can be against us if God is for us!” At least it’s probably an answer some Christians agree with. But guess what? That’s not the right answer. Come to think of it, it’s not even the right question. Even if it is a quote from the Bible and a line from a popular Christian song.

If God is for us, who can be against us? More

What’s the meaning of life? Or is life meaningless?

What’s the meaning of life? Or is life meaningless?  Those are questions that lots of people ask at various stages of our life.  It’s maybe most important though as we get older.  We wonder, was it all worthwhile.  Or maybe even feel like our life wasn’t worthwhile.  Could we have done things differently?  Better?  And maybe we wonder, what comes next?

brunch - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst …  Sounds like someone who wants to dig into the brunch picture below.  Until we add just two more words.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.  That really changed, didn’t it?  But still, it could mean “righteous” food, right?  As in really good stuff.  Or for you Guy Fieri fans – food that’s “the bomb”.

Sorry – it’s none of those things.  After all, it’s really supposed to be:

Mt 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

But even now, do we really understand what this means?  It could be a whole lot more than you think.  Maybe even more than you’re ready to hear?

The Lord gives and the Lord takes away

The Lord gives and The Lord takes away

The Lord gives and the Lord takes away.  It’s a pretty common saying.  It’s most likely to be used when something bad happens.  Like it’s supposed to make people feel better.  And it might actually accomplish that goal – if it was told correctly.  It’s like the old thing about the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  So here’s the truth about the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.  It’s true.  However, it’s not the whole truth.  Therefore, it isn’t actually “nothing but the truth”.
