The Narrow and Wide Gates - Matthew

An image of God appearing over a crowd of people praying, to illustrate: Psalm 33 - The Lord is our help and our shield

Psalm 33 – The Lord is our help and our shield
But, to help us do what?

The Psalm says, “We wait in hope for the Lord, He is our help and our shield”. But what does that really mean? The Lord is our help and shield to do what, exactly? What’s the goal? And who/what are we shielded from?

When you read the entire Psalm, it’s obviously praising God. It’s like a worship song. But, if all we do is read the last few verses, we might not realize that.

A scene with many paths to begin to answer the question - How come so many Christians don’t really know God?

How come so many Christians don’t really know God?

It seems like a weird, even dumb, question. How come so many Christians don’t really know God? It’s a very important question with a very disturbing answer. It’s all too easy for Christians to not know God! The headline shocked me. 51% of Churchgoers Don’t Know of the Great Commission, according to a Barna survey. I also found it very disappointing. Depressing even.

Is predestiny about who we are or free will choices? Calvinist beliefs.

Is predestiny about who we are or free will choices? Calvinist beliefs.

Predestiny and free will are two choices given to us by Christian denominations. By people, really. Those who influence what denominations believe about what God said. But are they choices given to us by God? You know, the One who gave the words to the people who actually wrote the books in the Bible? What if God’s words, not men’s words, say that predestiny is about the free will choices we make? We begin with Calvinist core beliefs.

It's week three of radiation treatment - time to be thankful

It’s week three of radiation treatment – time to be thankful – Psalm 23

Yesterday, I began the third week of my radiation treatment for prostate cancer. As I was laying in the tomography machine, the 23rd Psalm began to go through my mind. It was very comforting. Peaceful. Reassuring. And yes, that is the Psalm with the valley of the shadow of death. The Psalm that reminds us of what we have to be thankful for.

Letter to the Angel of the Church in Philadelphia

The letter to the Faithful church in Philadelphia – Revelation

We move on to The Letter to the church in Philadelphia. It’s unique within the seven letters in Revelation. It’s almost entirely filled with promises to the faithful in this church. Jesus has only good things to say to this church.  Therefore, the examination will obviously be about them.  What did they do right?  How might they have achieved such good news from Jesus?  And what can we learn for us today? That is, both for our churches and for us as individuals?
