God

If God is here - Where is He?

If God is here – Where is He?

If God is here, where is He?  That question seems to have a lot of doubt built into it.  Not since God is here, or since God exists, but If God is here.  Not to mention the obvious doubt that God is here, since there’s no apparent evidence of Him.

However, there are people who end up at this site looking for answers to questions like these two:

What does God want?
Does God cry when we die?

These are people that believe that at least God is here, but maybe wondering whether he still cares.

Are there gun people in Heaven?

Are there gun people in Heaven?

Are there gun people in Heaven?  You know – people who are really, really into guns?  A while back, I asked a similar question – Are the guns in Heaven?  And then there’s, Are there assault weapons in Heaven?  Asking if there are gun people in Heaven seems like a logical next question.

First off, by “gun people” I mean people who are really, really in favor of people having guns.  Someone like Meghan McCain, who recently said, “I’m not living without guns.  It’s just that simple.”

Christians don't want power

Do Christians want power?

Do Christians want power?  What kind of question is that?  Look around.  Of course Christians want power.  Check out the Republican Party.  Witness the strange almost worship-like adoration of Donald Trump by so many Evangelical Christians.  They want power.  So why does Scot McKnight say Christians don’t want power?  And why is he right?  How, in the face of all we see, can McKnight possibly be correct when he says Christians don’t want power?

Actually, both statements are correct – Christians do want power.  But also don’t want power.  It’s not really a question of whether or not Christians want power.  It’s a question of what do we mean by power.

demanding the meaning of truth

Demanding the meaning of truth – Part 1

Demanding the meaning of truth.  It’s from an interesting song – Freedom for the World.  Full of hope – like the title words, demanding the meaning of truth.  Also full of warnings like, if we don’t get it together we’ll be gone.  Not to mention the conclusion, Look to your heart and let love lead the way.  The irony is that depending on your point of view, the words of the song lead to wildly varying meanings of truth!  We will, of course, look at it from a Christian point of view.

Not the “nominal” Christian who tends to be little more than Christian in name only.  Or from the “average” Christian, who follows the parts of Jesus’ teachings that they like, and finds ways to rationalize ignoring the things they don’t like.  Instead, we’ll look at it from the point of view of the way Christians are actually taught to live.  A way that none actually achieve, other than Jesus Himself.

Sweat like a pig - in mud

Sweat like a pig. Or is it a horse? Or …?

You’ve probably heard of the expression, “sweat like a pig”.  Well, depending on where in the world you live.  You might even know what it really means.  But it got me to thinking this morning.

I went out for my morning walk, even though it was already getting hot at 7 AM.  By the time I got back, you guessed it, I was sweating.  Naturally, I thought about sweating like a pig.  But then I remember, pigs don’t sweat!

Of course, that got me to thinking about evolution.  You know – how come pigs don’t sweat?  People sweat.  Our dogs sweat, sort of.  Horses sweat.  So why not pigs?  I’m sure evolutionary science has an answer!  Sure enough, they do.

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman - a different view

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman – a different view

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman.  It’s part of John’s gospel that is often talked about. However, here’s a different view of it.  Sure, it’s important to show that the “living water” that Jesus offered was for everyone.  What if we look at it from the point of view of the Great Commission?  Not just as we’re to spread the word to all nations.  But as an example or template of how to go about spreading the gospel?

Notice the word on the chalkboard.  “Feedback”.  It seems like when we spread the gospel, we tend to want to talk.  Just keep saying the nice “churchy” words, and people will get the message.  They’ll say the so-called sinners prayer – which doesn’t exist – and be saved.  Not.

life buoy to illustrate Which god provides salvation for us?

Which god provides salvation for us?

Which god provides salvation for us?  Different people have different “gods” or deities.  Even those who claim to have no “god” have one – maybe they view themselves as “the deity” of their own world.  From there, we should recognize that outside of people who believe this life is “all there is” – we want something from our deity.  One of those things we want from our “god” is “salvation” – we want that “god” to save us from something.

trust - cheating = sportsmanship?

If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying = Sportsmanship?

You’ve probably heard the saying – If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.  These days, that’s called sportsmanship.  There’s even an extension to that saying.  It’s now If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying – and if you get caught, you’re not trying hard enough.

So – what’s the problem?  I think a huge part is that we’ve lost the concepts of good and bad.  There used to be good sportsmanship.  And the goal was to learn good sportsmanship.  But “good” is gone from the equation.  Without “good” – then there’s no “bad” either.  It’s just sportsmanship.  Oh – and winning.  So sportsmanship is doing whatever it takes to win.  Whatever.  At any cost.

But what’s the cost?  If you’re good at it – none.  If you’re not good enough at cheating – you get caught.  There’s a penalty of some sort.  If it’s bad enough, there’ll be e fine or suspension.  But what’s a few thousand dollars when someone’s making millions?  It’s no big deal.  Especially if there’s a championship at the end of the season.  Sportsmanship = If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.

Not a Christian nation - A Nation that repays evil with evil

A Nation that repays evil with evil is not a Christian nation

Hey Trump Christians – these questions are for you.  How do you feel, supporting a President that claims to be the best President ever for Christians, and yet acts the opposite of what Jesus told us to act?  Two says ago, Trump said, “We are a very reciprocal nation with me as the head. When somebody does something negative to us in terms of a country, we do it to them.”  In other words, we repay evil with evil.  Does that sound even remotely like something Jesus ever taught?  Does it bother you that your chosen candidate says and does things like this?  On top of that, consider the likelihood that you support Trump because of his claims about being so much in favor of Christians.

If you are unhappy with it, where is your voice?  More and more, polls show that the U.S. is no longer a Christian nation.  The fact that we have a leader who blatantly acts very un-Christian and yet claims to be so supportive of Christians tells us something.  It tells us that the polls are right.  We are more un-Christian as a nation.  A nation of individuals.  Individuals who seem to have lost sight of what Christianity is really about.  Or maybe we’re just a nation of so-called Christians who look to the devil to promote our Christian religion?

That might sound a bit strong.  Maybe very strong.  And yet, when so many Christians – including Christian leaders – are so silent when their candidate of choice says and does things like this.  When Trump claims to be so pro-Christian, where is the push-back or the talk of the reality of what he really does being so anti-Christian?  And it’s the same thing when he speaks like this.  Where’s the push-back, asking how someone who claims to be so pro-Christian can say things like that?  Isn’t accountability part of Christianity anymore?
